There are lots of possibly strange things to eat in foreign countries but, this is the strangest for Japan so far. These little guys can be purchased seasonally at the grocery store.
(I found these in Nagoya on my vision trip.)
I understand they are serve al dente (live) with a little soy sauce. Don't ask if they are good, you'll have to come try them yourselves.
